Little Rock Marathon Training: Week 2

This week started out strong, then I went and got my flu shot on Thursday and things just went downhill from there.  I planned on getting my flu shot this week for a reason:  it was not a huge mileage week and I only had 1 day of work I had to get through on Friday.

Here’s how the week went:

Monday:  stretch, core

Tuesday:  6 miles, 56:23.  This run felt really good, and we ended up doing in the evening.  I still want to get back to running in the morning, but right now I’m just going to go with whatever works for that day.

Wednesday: rest

Thursday:  I did some lifting at the gym and a core workout.  This was also flu shot day :(

Friday:  Hill repeats.  Did a total of 2.3 miles.  A whole post is coming this week on hill repeats.  News flash: it’s a hard workout.

Saturday:  Felt okay in the morning, walked the dogs and planned on going to the gym in the afternoon.  It didn’t happen, instead I snoodled up on the sofa and did some homework.  Later in the day we went to Whole Foods in Virginia Beach to pick up our turkey, and by the time we got home I had a horrible headache, my eyes hurt and had horrible light sensitivity, and my whole body ached.  There is a reason I haven’t gotten my flu shot in over 5 years (and never had the flu during that time!!), but it is now mandatory at my workplace and the consequences of not getting it are somewhat job-threatening.

Sunday:  Scheduled 8 miles.  Not done, woke up feeling better but still had a headache, and the outside temperature was in the 30s with a wind chill in the 20s.  Instead I did yoga and a core workout in the afternoon.  8 miles planned for tomorrow evening.

So this week wasn’t great for running (but it was awesome for getting all of my homework done for the rest of the semester!!), but I’m looking forward to a strong week 3 this week, with a 10k race on Thanksgiving day, and a long run on the W&OD trail near my mom’s house.

  1. I’ve tried a couple of hill repeats for less than a mile…very intense! Look forward to reading your post to learn how to tackle them! And that sucks that your flu shot didn’t go well…they almost seem to work 50/50 these days.
